Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Liberal Party are poised to form a minority government after winning 169 out of 343 electoral districts across Canada in the recently held Federal Election.
The Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre came second, securing 144 seats in the House of Commons. Mr. Poilievre, however, lost his seat in Carleton, Ontario, to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy, who garnered 50.8% of the votes.
Bloc Quebecois (leader: Yves-Francois Blanchet) and the New Democratic Party (leader: Jagmeet Singh) placed third (22 ridings won) and fourth (7 ridings won), respectively. The Green Party (leader: Jonathan Pedneault) managed to secure a lone seat in the Parliament when its candidate and co-leader Elizabeth May won for the fifth time in Saanich-Gulf Islands, BC.
Mr. Carney himself dominated the Nepean, Ontario, election by getting 63.8% of the 72,237 votes cast. The Conservative candidate came a far second with 33.2% of the votes.
Mr. Singh, like Mr. Poilievre, lost his seat in Burnaby Central, BC, after placing a mere third to Liberal’s Wade Chang, who won, and to the Conservative’s James Yan, who ranked second.
According to Elections Canada, 19,597,674 votes were cast in the April 28, 2025, general election.
